A lot of the all-time great franchises have withstood the test of time. From iconic movies that still look as great today as they did when they first released in theaters decades ago to legendary TV shows that changed the face of television itself and still hold up to this day. But it’s rare for a franchise to accomplish that and still be on our screens all those years after its heyday. The Walking Dead has pulled it off.
Undoubtedly one of the most popular cable TV shows of all time, The Walking Dead dominated TV itself for over a decade, spawning the TWD Universe in the process. It has picked up a huge fanbase across that time (known affectionately as the TWD Family) and those fans still tune into the various spinoff shows still airing on AMC and AMC today. That’s how you know you’ve made it as a historic franchise.
However, September 13 will be a very bittersweet day for that TWD fandom.
Dead City season 3 finale airs on September 13 (with no update on season 4)
Yep, you read that right: The Walking Dead: Dead City season 3 episode 8, titled “Tenebrae” will air on Sunday, September 13. The episode will be available to stream on AMC+ at midnight PT while airing directly on AMC’s linear channel that evening, in the typical 9:00 p.m. ET/PT timeslot that all of The Walking Dead shows have relied on over the years.
While fans are understandably very excited to see how the third season of the Maggie Rhee and Negan-led spinoff concludes, it’s a finale that will undoubtedly invoke mixed feelings. For starters, it will be a shame to see the current season bow out as it has easily been the best of the show’s run thus far. And, furthermore, that means that it will bow out with its fate uncertain, as Dead City has yet to be renewed by AMC for season 4.
There are some silver linings here: First and foremost, AMC’s Chief Content Officer of The Walking Dead Universe, Scott M. Gimple, is hoping for a fourth season – reiterating that the third was not planned to be the final season. Moreover, star and executive producer Lauren Cohan has confirmed that they are talking about some really unique “outside the box” storylines for Maggie and Negan’s next chapter. Her co-star and fellow EP Jeffrey Dean Morgan also joked that they might have to do another few seasons to fully flesh out the current versions of the characters. So there is clearly a desire for Dead City season 4 from all involved.
Moreover, this isn’t the first time that Dead City has wrapped up a season with its immediate fate unclear. The second outing concluded at the end of June 2025 before it was officially renewed for a third season that July, meaning that it’s quite possible that we could see a similar approach here. And honestly, there is scope for a fourth season beyond the storyline too, because season 3 has been a resounding success, receiving acclaim from fans and critics and generating the most buzz we have seen from the spinoff since it began back in 2023.
The biggest reason that fans are concerned about the Dead City season 4 renewal announcement is that the immediate future of the TWD Universe hinges on it. While we do have Daryl Dixon‘s fourth and final season coming out in 2027, there are no announced / definitive TWDU plans beyond that. We know that the-powers-that-be are working on them, but renewing Dead City is the easiest, quickest solution here.
There is a pretty high chance that the fourth season will coem to fruition. AMC isn’t done investing in the TWD Universe and the response to the third installment of Maggie and Negan’s Manhattan-based offshoot was a success all-around. There’s little reason to think that this story won’t continue. It just would be nice to have a clearer picture of the show’s – and the franchise’s overall – future before that third season does bow out. You know, just so that we can be sure that we will see Maggie and Negan once again in the not-too-distant future.
As we wait, however, we can’t wait to see how the pair’s fight against Dillard to preserve their vision for New York City pans out – because, as frightful as the franchise’s new villain is, he’s up against one of the most unexpectedly powerful partnerships the TWD Universe has ever seen. Never bet against these two!
