Chicago weather: Rain and storms threaten morning commute – NBC Chicago

NOTE: A ground stop is in effect for departures heading to Chicago’s O’Hare Airport through at least 11:30 a.m. CT, according to the FAA.

“Periods of rain” and possibly storms are expected to continue across parts of the Chicago area Tuesday, threatening to make for wet rush hour commutes.

According to NBC 5 Storm Team Iisha Scott, the rain and storms were hitting areas north and west of Chicago early Tuesday. That was expected to continue through the morning hours, coming to an end by early afternoon as conditions warm.

“Expect periods of rain from showers and embedded thunderstorms this morning, with the highest coverage near and north of I-80,” the National Weather Service warned Tuesday, urging drivers to use caution.

Just before 10 a.m., a ground stop was issued for Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport due to storms, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. The stop remains in effect through at least 11:30 a.m. for departures heading to Chicago from several airports.

Parts of the Chicago area remain under a marginal risk for severe weather, a level one of five, heading into the afternoon and evening. Those locations sit mainly south and west of Chicago.

But the Storm Prediction Center said much remains uncertain with the weakening afternoon system, particularly how strong and organized any storms could be.

The main threat area will be in areas near the city of Chicago and further to the south, with heavy rain and gusty winds the main threats with any severe storms that develop.

High temperatures on Tuesday are expected to be a bit warmer, with readings in the low-80s, and dew points are expected to rise into the 70s, which will make things feel very muggy outside.

Some showers could stick around the area into Wednesday morning, though they will still be scattered in nature, according to forecast models.

The chance for rain will slowly diminish later Wednesday morning, but could return later in the day as an “unsettled” weather pattern continues this week.
