Frank Lampard spoke to BBC Radio CWR about Wednesday’s EFL Cup match against Aston Villa: “I’m very excited for the occasion and for the fans. We got to the Premier League for these kind of fixtures. I know this is a game that the fans hold dear and they haven’t had so many of these in recent years.
“I understand the occasion and atmosphere will be big and hopefully we can tap in to that ourselves. We want to get the right result for our fans.
“We have to understand we’re playing against a Premier League and a Champions League team. We’re happy to have the support at home.
“It has a different feeling to what the Premier League stress brings. Cup football is great at this stage of the season to get a game that means so much to the fans, I think you should tap slightly in to the emotions of it.”
Discussing potential changes to his team, Lampard said: “It’s a game we certainly want to win. I have heard lots of reaction over the years about, ‘why did the manager do this with cup games?’ but when you work day to day with players and they are training at a good level and want to get in the team – then sometimes you have to give them the opportunities and they hopefully show you stuff that bodes well going forward.
“We will certainly try and strike the balance between being competitive as we want to be and potential to see some players and show what they can do.”
