Among the many moves the Washington Commanders made in the offseason was signing cornerback Amik Robertson, who spent the first four years of his career with the Las Vegas Raiders before being signed by the Detroit Lions in 2024, where he spent two years.
In 2024, Robertson and the Lions faced then-rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels and the Commanders in the playoffs. Daniels shredded the Lions defense, completing 71 percent of his passes for nearly 300 passing yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions and another 51 yards on the ground. It is also the only playoff game Daniels was not sacked in.
Robertson remembers seeing Daniels play for LSU in college and game-planning for him ahead of that playoff matchup. Especially for someone who was a rookie at the time, Robertson was very impressed with his performance and how the game had already slowed down for him.
“A quarterback that young. Of course, we saw what he did at LSU. I’m a Louisiana guy. I watched LSU. But, to see him put up at the next level, you’re not surprised,” Robertson said. “But you’re, wow, right? And to see he’s that young, to be able to go out there and to be able to see the game. Slow the game down for a rookie, it’s not too many people that, quarterbacks that come out there and do that. Just watching tape on him, we game plan for him the whole week … We game planned for him the whole week and he was at the biggest stage and he had to be successful.”
Perhaps part of what allowed Daniels to be so successful in that moment was his five years of college experience. He spent three years at Arizona State before transferring to LSU and spending his final two years there, winning the Heisman in 2023. Now in his third year in the NFL, he’ll be looking to help his team return to the playoffs after a 5-12 season last year.
