Days before Carmine Agnello, the grandson of late Gambino crime boss John Gotti, surrendered to federal authorities to begin serving his sentence for defrauding a COVID-19 relief program, he married the woman who had accused him of beating her and shattering her phone, according to his lawyer.
Despite his incarceration in federal prison, Agnello, 40, former reality TV star of “Growing Up Gotti,” remains charged with third-degree assault, criminal obstruction of breathing and criminal mischief in Nassau County District Court in Hempstead.
On June 2 around 10:30 p.m., according to prosecutors, Agnello became suspicious that his then-girlfriend, Ariana Puran, had cheated on him, and he demanded to see her phone while the couple were at the East Norwich home where he lives with his mother, Victoria Gotti. He started pushing and shoving her, police said.
The woman went out to her car when the confrontation became physical, and Agnello followed her, according to court papers.
He then slapped her on her left cheek and punched the left side of her face, according to court records, then put both hands around her neck and began throttling her.
Puran told police that Agnello pushed her to the ground and began kicking her repeatedly in the lower body.
He then took her iPhone 17 Pro Max and smashed it on the ground, destroying it, according to the criminal complaint.
The next day, police arrived just before the tipoff of the first game of the Knicks-Spurs NBA Finals, prosecutors said at his arraignment.
Agnello asked them to wait until after the game was over but, after some discussion, surrendered to police custody, according to court testimony.
At his arraignment, Puran sat in the front row and afterward said she loved him and denied cheating on him.
“It’s just a regular couple’s argument. I’m not going to pursue the charges,” she told Newsday.
Defense attorney Steve Christiansen said, “We’re working on a resolution.”
Agnello was scheduled to surrender to federal custody after he pleaded guilty in September 2024 to wire fraud after he received $1.1 million in pandemic relief funds for his company, Crown Auto Parts & Recycling LLC, to which authorities said he was not entitled.
He used $420,000 of the money to invest in a cryptocurrency that went out of business.
District Judge Nusrat Choudhury sentenced him to 15 months in prison, to begin on June 12.
However, he said his mother was ill with kidney disease and he was a “great match” to be a donor, so he asked that the sentencing be delayed while doctors determined if he was a match.
The judge agreed to delay the surrender date several times, but later determined that the transplant would not be scheduled in the near future and ordered him to surrender on Aug. 10.
Agnello and Puran tied the knot on Aug. 8, Christiansen told Newsday.
Puran and Victoria Gotti declined to comment for this article.
