Texas State had the misfortune of starting its season facing a loaded Texas team that is currently ranked No. 4 in the nation. As such, the result was one-sided, with Texas State falling 59-7 against its in-state rival. Quarterback Brad Jackson had 150 passing yards on 15 of 23 completions with one interception, while running back Torrance Burgess Jr. had 12 carries for 34 yards. Tucker Cusano caught three passes for 58 yards in the outing. Last season, Texas State went 7-6 last season with a 4-4 record in AAC play.

UTSA, meanwhile, opened its season against UT Rio Grande Valley, with the Roadrunners coming out on top 45-16. UTSA quarterback connected on 22 of 27 passes for 275 yards and three touchdowns, while running back Will Henderson had nine carries for 101 yards and one score. DJ Allen had a great day catching the ball, securing three passes for 116 yards and one touchdown.

The I-35 Rivalry between UTSA and Texas State has 22 matches in its history dating back to 1991-92. UTSA leads the series 13-9, courtesy of having won four straight matchups in this series. The last time these teams faced off was in 2025, a 43-36 win for Texas State.
