Back in early 2025, Sony Pictures were feeling confident about the I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot they were hyping up.
Who could blame them? The movie had its original stars attached, and the trailers had garnered considerable online buzz. Riding this wave, the studio then announced that a reboot of another beloved 1990’s slasher property was in the works. They intended to reboot 1998’s Urban Legend!
At the time, Shannah Wakefield was attached to pen the script, with IT’s Gary Dauberman aboard to produce. Original producer Neal H. Moritz was also in negotiations to return, having also been involved in the Last Summer reboot.
However, as we know, 2025’s Last Summer didn’t go over as well as Sony and Screen Gems had hoped. The movie failed to meet expectations both critically and commercially, so chat of an Urban Legend reboot seemed to disappear.
However, there is one original star who seems eager to return, should the project still be in the works.
Actress Rebecca Gayheart unquestionably stole the show with her unhinged portrayal of Brenda Bates. Now, she’s speaking up about the talk of a reboot, and her desire to return to Urban Legend.
“There has been a lot of chatter about [a reboot], I don’t think anything has come to fruition yet. I would be open to it, because I really love Brenda Bates. I think she was ahead of her time, I love that they let a female be a serial killer … And I think she was justified in her actions.”
Gayheart continued:
“So, yes, I’m open to it. If it’s done right and they stick to the tone of how we originated the movie. I would absolutely love to be a part of it.”
So, at least we have some positive news, which could bring renewed interest to a reboot that seems to have vanished.
Following the lacklustre performance of Last Summer, does an Urban Legend reboot even stand a chance? Opinions are divided.
However, we’ll keep a close eye out for any further Urban Legend news, and update you as soon as we can.
