College football fans around the country are really missing Lee Corso this season.
Last week, “College GameDay” was ripped to shreds for inviting U.S. Senator Ted Cruz onto the show to discuss the Protect College Sports Act. Blake Toppmeyer of USA Today Sports later released a column about Nick Saban and “College GameDay” pushing political propaganda this season.
If Pat McAfee and the “College GameDay” crew wanted to fight back against that claim this Saturday, they have a weird way of showing it.
During the first hour of Saturday’s show, ESPN’s camera crew showed two helicopters from the Mississippi Army National Guard. Instead of letting the images on the screen do the talking, McAfee made a comment about the American military.
“We certainly appreciate the heck out of the American military. And if you’re not the United States of America and you hear that sound, your [expletive] better run,” McAfee said.
Rece Davis then chimed in with this comment: “That’s the one thing the two sides here can agree on, for sure.”
The past two editions of “College GameDay” have been so controversial that fans are really starting to miss Corso, who had his final show on Aug. 30, 2025. Although the 91-year-old legend is still paying close attention to the sport, he doesn’t plan on returning to TV.
“I miss Lee Corso,” one fan declared.
“Every day I miss Lee Corso more,” a second fan commented.
“It’s absurd how far this show has fallen down, from the glory days of Fowler & Corso,” another fan wrote on X.
“Lee Corso deeply cared about college football. David Pollack has some problematic thoughts but at least he loved college football. Saban and McAfee are only there for their own self interests. It sucks,” a social media user declared.
Kirk Herbstreit defends “College GameDay” from its critics.
Prior to this Saturday’s show, Kirk Herbstreit said ESPN only had Cruz on the show to discuss the Protect College Sports Act. He claims the network wasn’t trying to get political.
“I’ve never seen a guy booed that long and be able to power through that. I think he was booed pretty much the entire time he spoke,” Herbstreit said. “I don’t really follow it. I don’t know anything about his political views. I don’t know what he’s for or against. I care about football, my family, my faith and my country.”
While there’s no question “College GameDay” will remain one of ESPN’s best shows this season, it’s possible the crew needs to change up its approach.
